How to choose performance fabric for activewear.

Start with the garment and test requirement, not the fiber name. Define target weight, stretch, recovery, moisture behavior, handfeel, appearance and price before selecting nylon, polyester, natural blends or stretch woven constructions.

Performance knit and woven fabric selection for activewear

The short answer

For close-to-body garments, prioritize stretch recovery, opacity and handfeel. For training tops, prioritize drying, air permeability and low wet cling. Golf polo fabrics need a clean surface, dimensional stability and controlled moisture transport. Outdoor layers require a balance of protection, breathability, durability and low weight. A fiber label alone cannot confirm any of these results.

Five variables to define before sampling

Garment and activity

Specify whether the fabric is for leggings, a polo, a running top, a fleece mid-layer or a lightweight shell. Movement, skin contact and exposure conditions change the correct construction.

Weight and width

Record target GSM and usable width together. A typical brief might start around 140-190 GSM for lightweight tops, 180-240 GSM for polos and 220-300 GSM for leggings, subject to construction and brand standards.

Stretch and recovery

State stretch direction, test method and recovery expectation. High initial stretch without stable recovery can cause knee bagging, waist deformation and inconsistent garment measurements.

Moisture and surface

Choose the required outcome: quick drying, wicking, air permeability, water repellency, peach handfeel, cool touch, matte appearance or abrasion resistance. Finishes must be verified after the required wash cycles.

Commercial limits

Include quantity, color count, target price, testing protocol and delivery date. These variables determine whether an existing quality, adjusted finish or new construction is the practical route.

Selection by garment scenario

Yoga and studio leggings

Use a dense knit with balanced four-way stretch, reliable recovery and the opacity required by the pattern and color. Many programs evaluate the 220-300 GSM range, but knitting density and elastane management are more meaningful than weight alone. Test recovery, pilling, colorfastness and dimensional stability after repeated washing.

Running and indoor training

Lightweight polyester jerseys and meshes are common because they can combine drying performance, ventilation and color flexibility. Evaluate air permeability, wet cling, snagging and the durability of moisture-management finishes. Body-mapped garments may require two or more constructions with compatible shade and shrinkage.

Golf polo collections

A golf polo needs a refined surface and enough mechanical stability for collar, placket and embroidery operations. Pique, jersey and fine structured knits are common routes. Buyers should compare shrinkage, spirality, pilling, colorfastness and drying behavior while keeping the intended clubhouse appearance.

Outdoor layers

For shorts, trousers and light shells, stretch woven nylon or polyester can provide movement with lower weight than heavy knit constructions. Define water repellency, air permeability, tear strength and abrasion requirements. Durable water-repellent performance should be checked before and after the brand's specified laundering sequence.

Premium athleisure

Natural blends can differentiate a collection through touch and appearance, but they require disciplined shrinkage and surface testing. Cotton, wool, modal, viscose, linen or silk blends should be selected around the final care label and expected wearing environment rather than fiber story alone.

Questions buyers ask before development

Is nylon or polyester better for activewear?

Nylon is usually chosen for softer handfeel and refined stretch garments. Polyester is often chosen for quick drying, printability and cost control. Construction and finishing remain decisive.

What GSM is suitable for leggings?

Many projects begin around 220-300 GSM. Opacity, recovery, knitting density and garment pattern must be assessed together.

What should a development brief include?

Composition, GSM, usable width, stretch, recovery, handfeel, finish, color, quantity, testing requirements, target price and delivery date.

How should samples be compared?
